Going nowhere

Passion. The one emotion that drives an individual to impossible heights. My life has reached a point where I am no longer passionate about anything. Few things excite me. Drive me. Despite what some of them say, without discipline and will-power a man is nothing. I guess being surrounded by cynics does that to you. At least I can still introspect. Gotta buck up. This blog has not been updated for over two freaking years. And I am supposed to be a journalist!

After five years of working on the newsdesk of three newspapers I find myself pondering over one question, 'Whither commitment?' Is journalism all about achieving cult status and big bucks today? Not that these virtues are a problem. Prannoy Roy makes a lot of money, Vinod Mehta does too and so do a number of other senior journalists. So why do I respect people like Roy and Mehta while I can't stand some of the other journalists? Commitment, lack of initiative and a lot of times, paucity of grey matter! Yeah, a lot of people tell me, 'What do you know about people like Roy, they do this, they do that...' That's fine, I judge people by the manner in which they speak and conduct themselves. Breaking news!

The other day I watched a panel discussion with veteran journalist P Sainath, rural affairs editor with the Hindu, and Arun Shourie, former Indian Express editor and much else, on the path journalism is on. Sainath has received the Ramon Magsaysay award for his tireless coverage of rural problems. I was impressed to learn that he spends almost 300 days a year in rural India, writing about food, power and water problems. A far cry from the air-conditioned comforts of modern newsrooms. Journalism in India, as is the case globally, has been reduced to a commercial venture. Make money or perish. It's no joke, a number of newspapers have actually fallen by the wayside. TRPs and advertisers decide what makes news and what does not. I am not qualified to talk about television, but I have a fair understanding of the print media. No laughing matter

I recently had the misfortune of watching Grand Masti, a Hindi movie touted as India’s first adult comedy. Having suffered through the film, I was not amused to learn that it has entered the hallowed Rs100-crore club (a crore works out to 10 million) in terms of its performance at the box office. Clearly, this movie was made for the single-screen theatre era, where the frontbenchers (the cheapest seats) trooped in to get some cheap thrills. That a film like this should do so well in the multiplex era where the audience -- I would like to believe -- is educated and discerning, came as a shock to me. But then there are still plenty of single-screen theatres in India and perhaps it made its money there. Let’s be clear, Grand Masti is not funny unless fantasizing about skimpily-clad women every waking moment is your idea of comedy.
